Our wisdom doesn’t always match our age, It all depends on how you lived your life. We often say, "Now, back in former days..." When we rebuke our youth for slips or strife. It was not like that in our day and age: We did not walk the roads that you are walking. It was not like that in our day and age: We did not talk the way that you are talking. It was not true in our own day and age. Yes, youth is surely not without its faults. And we were often told as much, or worse. But we have been through hell in our assaults, And brought our banners to the Reichstag’s doors. It was not like that in our day and age: The roads we walked on are the ones you’re walking. It was not like that in our day and age: Although we talked the way that you are talking. It was not true in our own day and age. I do believe, I say, I know that I am right: The easygoing youth we see today Will surely be among the first to fight In times of hardship, leading all the way. It was like that in our own day and age: The roads we walked on are the ones you’re walking. It was like that in our own day and age: The way we talked remains the way you’re talking. It was like that in our own day and age! There is no need for halos, or fine words, Or monuments for who we all have been. Let sons and fathers be at odds in prose, And let our children honor all their kin. Let’s keep it that way! - in our day and age. We’re on the road; we’re walking it together. Let’s keep it that way! - in our day and age. We have a common dream, a joint endeavor. Let’s keep it that way! - in our day and age.
